Armenia’s Justice Ministry applies to Venice Commission to get opinion over Istanbul Convention from Armenia's Constitution's viewpoint
Armenia’s Justice Ministry has applied to the Venice Commission to get its opinion about Istanbul Convention, minister Rustam Badasyan noted.
In his Facebook post Badasyan wrote that taking into consideration the concerns raised over the Council of Europe Convention on Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and Fight against it, the ministry applied to the Venice Commission to get its official opinion over the impact of the ratification of the convention from the viewpoint of Armenia’s Constitution.
“Upon receiving the Commission’s opinion the Ministry will publish it,” the minister wrote.
The convention was signed in 2011 in Istanbul receiving name Istanbul Convention.
It consists of 81 articles and condemns violence against women.
The issue of constitutionality of the convention must be discussed at the Constitutional Court and if it corresponds to Armenia’s Constitution it will be approved and then ratified by the NA.
