Tehran ex-mayor sentenced to death for murder of his wife
The former mayor of Tehran and former vice-president of the country Mohammad Ali Najafi was sentenced to death for the murder of his wife, Mehr agency reported referring to Gholam Hossein Esmaeili, the official representative of the judiciary.
According to the representative of the judicial authorities, Najafi was found guilty and sentenced to a punishment in Islamic law, equal in weight to the crime committed.
The wife of the ex-mayor of Tehran was shot dead in a residential building in an elite neighborhood in northern Tehran late May. Najafi surrendered to law enforcement officers and confessed to killing his wife, stating that it was due to family problems. Najafi served as mayor of Tehran from August 2017 to April 2018. During his political career, he also headed the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education of Iran.
