Armenia’s defense minister does not exclude exchange of Armenian captives in Azerbaijan with Azerbaijani saboteurs
Armenia’s defense minister Davit Tonoyan met on Thursday with the ICRC Armenia representative who conveyed the Azerbaijani proposal of exchange to the Armenian side.
“There are some issues that need to be discussed. I cannot unveil them now. Additional work is necessary to clarify information. As soon as we get necessary information from Azerbaijan, we will respond,” the minister told the reporters today.
Tonoyan stressed that the Armenian side is not principally against the return of the Armenian citizens and will support the process.
The minister noted that the issue is not being viewed from exchange perspective as it is not a right approach. The minister said it is a humanitarian action.
“I am working to return my citizens to Armenia,” the minister said.
Tonoyan did not exclude the possibility of exchange of Armenian citizens with Azerbaijani saboteurs convicted in Artsakh.
“I do not exclude it, but it is the issue of Artsakh's sovereign decision,” the minister stressed
