Political persecution carried out against Hrayr Tovmasyan: attorney

The political persecution against chairman of Constitutional Court Hrayr Tovmasyan is more than clear, attorney Amram Makinyan told Aysor.am, referring to the initiation of criminal proceedings against CC chairman on the basis of application by lawmaker Arman Babajanyan.

He said the issue must be viewed in the pre-context of a number of developments.

“Persecutions launched against godchildren of Hrayr Tovmasyan. They have been charged. One of them is in custody. If to view the issue from the pre-context that the NSS started examining the property of Hrayr Tovmasyan on the basis of media reports, it becomes absolutely clear that an open political persecution is being carried out against CC chairman,” the attorney said.

He stressed that the initiation of criminal proceedings against the CC chairman is an unprecedented phenomenon and raises serious concerns.

“The initiation of criminal case already supposes political persecution. No legal processes are taking place in this case. It is a political order against Hrayr Tovmasyan and there is no need to make deep analysis to understand that all this is being done to terminate his authorities at any cost,” the attorney said.

At the same time Makinyan expressed conviction that the criminal case against Hrayr Tovmasyan will not remain without consequences in international human rights organizations.

Lawmaker Arman Babajanyan claims that Hrayr Tovmasyan has assumed the post of the CC chairman illegally. He also said that he has reported about the crime – usurpation of power – addressing corresponding application to the attorney general’s office.

Earlier today Special Investigation Service reported about initiating criminal proceedings upon Babajanyan’s application.
