No dangerous developments expected in Georgia: expert
No dangerous developments will take place in Georgia if force majeure situations do not occur, expert in Georgian affairs Jonny Melikyan told Aysor.am referring to the barricades built by protesters in Tbilisi outside of the parliament building.
“I do not see such a critical mass which expresses its protest in streets by wide-scale protest rallies. Indeed, there is a dissatisfaction among the population but it has not reached the point for thousands or tens of thousands take to streets. If such situation occurs absolutely other developments will follow,” the expert said.
Melikyan said the tension in Georgia occurred after the failure of constitutional amendment regarding the election system.
“Georgian dream party on behalf of its president Bidzina Ivanishvili promised in summer to prepare and approve a package of constitutional reforms with which Georgia will pass to 100% proportional system. The recent developments showed that the ruling force has not kept its promise. I think it is a rather serious gift to the opposition to use it against the authorities,” Jonny Melikyan said.
The expert stressed that the wave of protest is incomparably weaker from the one raised in summer during the anti-Russian protests.
“The further pace of the events will depend on how the law enforcers will behave, what steps the authorities will undertake. On the other hand, to avoid the deepening of the crisis the Georgian authorities and the opposition must listen to the urges of the EU and the USA to start dialogue,” the expert said.
