Number of opposition MPs enough for applying to CC

Two parliamentary opposition factions may apply together to the CC to appeal the president’s decision to conduct constitutional referendum.

The issue may be appealed at the CC if 1/5 (26 MPs) of NA deputies apply to the Constitutional Court.

Eighty-eight deputies out of 132 are from My Step bloc, 26 are from Prosperous Armenia and 18 from Bright Armenia. Thus, the number of opposition MPs makes 44 which makes it possible for them to apply to the CC.

Chairman of the NA’s State-Legal Affairs Standing Committee Vladimir Vardanyan earlier stated that if 1/5 of the National Assembly deputies apply to the Constitutional Court to appeal the president’s decision or decree, the CC will decide to suspend this process or not.

The president signed the decree appointing referendum for April 5.

The referendum is aimed at ceasing the tenure of the CC chairman Hrayr Tovmasyan and six judges.
