Armenian political leadership must either reject Lavrov’s statement or the proposal: expert
Obviously Russia’s position contradicts the ideas and position of the Armenian side voiced during the past two years, political analyst Suren Sargsyan told Aysor.am, adding that currently an attempt is being made to force Armenia undertake certain steps and push forward the stage-by-stage option.
“I think the international community may exert some pressure on Armenia. The fact is that for two years the Armenian side claimed that negotiations are not being held and no document is on the table of negotiations and that no step has been made secretly from the public. But the statement of the Russian FM implies that negotiations were conducted and in essence there is document about stage-by-stage solution and nevertheless, a negotiations process occurred,” Sargsyan said.
The expert said that the existing situation may be regulated only in case Armenia’s political leadership gives clear assessments – either rejects Lavrov’s statement or rejects the proposal.
“I think the situation may calm down only in this case,” the political analyst said.
Referring to the Mnatsakanyan-Mammadyarov video-conference, Sargsyan noted that all these meetings are not an end in itself and the mentioned one was a consultation which was aimed at preparing the next talks.
“After coronavirus retreats a bit, we may have another environment where we will understand whether the Armenian side negotiated during the past two years or not and whether there is a stage-by-stage option or not,” Sargsyan said.
