Azerbaijan to be called to responsibility by ECHR ruling in Gurgen Margaryan’s case
After 16 years of consistent fight the justice has been restored, representative of Gurgen Margaryan’s successors in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Siranuysh Sahakyan told the reporters today, referring to the ECHR ruling.
“We have initiated the processes in international judicial instances to bring Azerbaijan to responsibility. Unfortunately, the Hungarian courts did not ascribe murder to Azerbaijan and the murder of the Armenian officer remained on the private dimension,” she said, adding that they managed to change the dimension and now there is a responsibility episode for Azerbaijan in violation of human rights.
“The first achievement of this ruling is that it has called to responsibility the state, and in future the addressee will be not the murderer but Azerbaijan,” she said, noting with regret that the ruling does not register the fact of violation by Hungary.
The representative said in future they will address to the Big Chamber with this issue to bring Hungary to responsibility.
“Historically this is the first ruling with which an international judicial instance registers Azerbaijan’s anti-Armenianism, discrimination and hatred.
This must be followed with the events that will ensure punishment for the murderer,” Sahakyan said.
She stressed that their fight was and is in moral dimension as Gurgen Margaryan’s family did not put the issue of material compensation from the very beginning.
