Cutting even one tree in conditions of global warming is crime: environmentalist
Nork gardens, Manument and Tsitsernakaberd heights as well as the Botanical Garden used to be Yerevan’s "lungs:, the source of the capital’s clean air, but the tree cuts in 90s essentially harmed Yerevan’s ecosystem, environmentalist, president of Green Future NGO Vahagn Varagyan told Aysor.am.
He stressed that instead of restoring wood territories very quickly, the tree cuts continue today as well and a decision is being made on state level to partially sell Nork gardens.
“Only the buyer knows what he will do with Nork gardens. We have such example of it when two days ago in Yerevan Mashtots park two huge trees were cut with no one giving any assessment to it,” Varagyan said, adding that current mayor Hayk Marutyan was starting his career there.
The environmentalist said the continuous tree cuts in Yerevan and transport emissions will finally result in ecological disaster, raise in the number of oncological diseases.
“Cutting even one tree in the conditions of global warming is a crime,” he said, stressing that they are discussing actions they will take on August 11 during the sell of the Nork gardens.
