Bright Armenia, AFF and others ready to provide guarantees for footballer Edgar Malakyan’s release

As it has been reported earlier Yerevan court of general jurisdiction upheld the motion of investigator to select arrest as pre-trial measure for footballer Edgar Malakyan. The same court though rejected the motion to arrest the other footballer Malakyan’s brother Gor Malakyan.

Bright Armenia faction has expressed readiness to submit guarantees as an alternative to the applied pre-trial measure for Edgar Malakyan.

“We have expressed our readiness, if the lawyers apply to us, as they are the one who should organize it, I mean if they find it expedient, there is no problem, we will do it, as we have said,” head of Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan said, speaking to Aysor.am.

Brothers' lawyer Gor Mikayelyan told Aysor.am that many expressed readiness to submit guarantees.

“The statement of the Armenian Football Federation has also been published which too is expression of readiness of guarantees. Currently we are discussing the issue and more probably we will free Edgar Malakyan from jail,” the lawyer said.

Gor Mikayelyan said they have not appealed the court’s ruling yet.

“It will be quite weighty appeal, it cannot be prepared in a day, but definitely we will appeal,” the lawyer said.

The footballer brothers are charged under the Criminal Code articles on using violence against a representative of the authorities and on committing hooliganism.

At around 11 p.m. on August 30, the footballer brothers 26 and 29 had had an altercation with the police in downtown Yerevan.
