This is a complicated diplomatic situation: Pompeo on upcoming meeting with Armenian, Azeri FMs
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed the intention to meet with foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan on October 23 in Washington DC to discuss the possibilities of de-escalation of the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
Asked what he expects from the meeting with the foreign ministers and whether the ceasefire regime is one of the options, Pompeo said: “Your first question is what I would like to achieve by meeting with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan. You talked about what the US will undertake for another ceasefire and hinted that the previous ceasefire agreements weren’t implemented.”
Pompeo stressed that the situation is complicated.
"It is a complicated situation on the ground, it’s a complicated diplomatic situation. Our view, as the view of nearly every European country, is that the right path is to cease the conflict, tell them to de-escalate, and every country should stay out, provide no fuel for this conflict, no weapons system, no support," he said, adding that only after that it will be possible to achieve a diplomatic solution that will be acceptable for everyone.
"This is what I will discuss with the ministers,” Pompeo said.
