Genocide Convention not being applied retroactively – U.S. Ambassador
From the legal perspective Genocide Convention is not being applied retroactively, U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy said in an interview with RFE/RL.
“With respect to legal liabilities the events of the Armenian Genocide took place in 1915, the Genocide Convention did not come into force until 1951 and our understanding is that from the legal perspective the Convention is not being applied retroactively,” the Ambassador said.
As to the US relations with Turkey, Tracy said that Turkey is an important NATO ally of the United States.
“But Biden Administration has also made very clear that the disagreements that the United States and Turkey have will need to be managed very effectively,” the Ambassador said.
